It is the colour that determines the price of the ruby, second criteria being clarity. The ruby is one of the four precious gemstones: diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire and is quite hard - 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

For hundreds of years Myanmar (the modern day Burma) was the main source of deep red rubies. Today ruby also comes from India, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Vietnam, Pakistan, Macedonia and even Greenland.

Most of the rubies on the market are treated to enhance their color; a genuine ruby in a deep rich color, like the famous Myanmar ruby, is relatively rare and commands high fees.
