Once again, a technology problem has been solved with a staggeringly simple solution. In this case, the quandary is how toreallyplay video games on your touch-screen smartphone. Touch screens feel floaty and unsatisfying when playing "conventional" games, like fighting titles and first-person shooters. To fix this, ThinkGeek offered up the Joystick-It Tablet Arcade Stick ($24.99, 3.5 stars), a stick-onlygame controllerfor tablets. Unfortunately, its relatively huge form would eclipse the screens of most smartphones. The answer, like the suction cup joystick itself, was incredibly simple: make the joystick much smaller. Now theres the Joystick-It for iPhone, a mini version of the Joystick-It that not only works with its namesake phone, but any touch-screen phone.
While the original version "towers" at 1.8 inches and measures a "full" 1.3 inches wide, the Joystick-It Mobile is a puny 0.8 inches tall and 0.7 inches wide. Despite its relatively smaller stature, its otherwise exactly the same: a milled aluminum joystick with a prominent ball on top, a flat base, a suction cup, and a ring of a special mesh that activates the touch screen, triggering the virtual directions in most games.
Like the first Joystick-It, the mini version works fairly well. After you slap it onto the screen, you can play any game with a direction pad far better, with a much more natural (or, at least, conventional) feeling of control. The smaller joystick is too small to use as a grippable stick and is better used as a thumbpad, but at this it works well enough. However, considering its smaller size and lack of a decent grip for joystick-style controls like the larger model, the Joystick-It Mobile might have been better as a concave thumbpad instead of a micro-joystick. While the joystick ball functions as a thumb controller, a wider, flatter surface for the thumb would likely have made the accessory feel better and more precise.
I tested the Joystick-It on my Droid X loaded with Konamis X-Men arcade game. While the smaller stick (and the Droid Xs larger-than-average screen) required a little adjustment to make sure the pad hit every direction, once I put it in place it played well. I could navigate to all corners of the screen and quickly switch directions, with better tactile response than the regular virtual direction pad.
If you plan to game a lot on your touch-screen phone, the Joystick-It Arcade Stick for iPhone is a good investment. At $18, its a bit expensive for a piece of aluminum on a suction cup, but like the tablet Joystick-It, this little accessory can vastly improve the gaming experience.
